A barricade situation in Annandale, Va., has prompted Fairfax County Public Schools to lock the doors at Beech Tree Elementary.

Fairfax County Schools spokesperson Paul Regnier says the school implemented a "secure the building" protocol after a recommendation from Fairfax County police. That means the school's outside doors are locked to prevent unauthorized access to the school, Regnier explained.

While there are no plans to delay dismissal, which scheduled for 3:50 p.m., Regnier adds that a Fairfax County police commander is working to ensure students that walk home from school can get home safely.

Police were called to the 3300 block of Hickory Court at 10:20 a.m. Wedensday for the report of a domestic assault, officials said. Investigators say the victim was able to the get out of the home and the suspect barricaded himself inside.

A SWAT team has surrounded the home, and negotiators are talking to the suspect to encourage him to surrender.

Neighbors were notified of the situation through a reverse 911 call. Police say residents can continue their normal activities.
