Discovery Channel workers call hot dog stand employee a hero

Tuesday was the first full day back to work for Discovery Channel employees after a hostage stand-off in Silver Spring last week. Many employees were stopping by nearby hot dog stand Augie's Doggies, not just for lunch, but to say thanks to a man they are calling a life-saver.

"I think he's a hero," said one person about Isidro Cabrera.

Augie's Doggies is right outside the Discovery Channel lobby and Wednesday afternoon, Isidro Cabrera noticed unusual activity inside.

Isidro Cabrera told us, "I saw the guy."

Customer Peter Aldrighetti added, "There were a lot of people who didn't know what was going on...who were up here walking around."

So Cabrera jumped into action, warning employees returning from lunch to stay out.

"Everything was very quickly, very, very, very quickly," recalled Cabrera. "You knew that you needed to keep people from going inside? I stopped a lot of people - don't go inside that's the only thing to do."

A group of Discovery employees returned to the stand Tuesday and while they couldn't talk on camera other customers overheard their words of gratitude.

Augustin Sanchez said they employees told Cabrera, "Thank you, thank you very much, because you saving my life."

As for Cabrera, he's reluctant to take the credit, saying he did what anyone would do.

"You surprise me because you say hero - I don't know," said Cabrera.

But it's clear his actions meant the world to those who could have walked in only to discover the danger inside.

"So this is the daily ritual -- getting hot dogs?" ABC 7 News asked one customer.

The customer replied, "It will be now."

We saw an increased police and security presence around Discovery on Tuesday. The lobby entrance was closed to visitors and only employees could enter with a keycard.
