Fisher-Price toy recall 2010: Washington area parents react
Fisher Price is recalling more than 11 million toys, tricycles and high chairs after the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday the tricycles and high chairs were to blame for children's injuries. Now, parents are scrambling to check what toys they have in their homes.
The major recall involves four different Fisher Price products. Some 7 million tricycles such as Hot Wheels, Barbie Free Spirit and Boys Tough Trike are being recalled because of a fake key protruding from the bike frame that has been known to cause injury, including genital bleeding.
"Reading labels doesn't seem to make a difference. You buy something you think is safe and six months later it turns out it's not safe," says Julianna Miner of the blog Rants from Mommyland, which she and co-author Kristen Wilson Keppler write out of their homes in Fairfax. They have three kids each and plenty of toys.
Nearly one million high chairs are being recalled. They are sold under the names Healthy Care, Easy Clean and Close to Me. The danger is a bolt on the back legs for storing the chair's tray. Several of the bolts stick out, causing kids to fall.
"At the end of the day you're going to have to go through your entire house, the bathroom, the nursery the outside, the inside every toy box...to find out if this is part of the recall," says Keppler.
Nearly 3 million inflatable balls are also being recalled because their valves can come off and there were 14 incidents of children putting objects in their mouths; at least three choked on them. The wheels on the purple and green Little People cars can detach too and also become a choking hazard.
Miner shared, "It makes me nervous between the Fisher Price recall and all the concerns about lead I'm starting to feel like maybe no toys are safe."
