UPDATE 12:08 p.m.: Montgomery County police are searching for a man who shot at his ex-girlfriend Tuesday morning, leading to a manhunt that briefly closed a section of Interstate 270 and forced a school to lock its doors to outsiders.

Police identified the gunman as 32-year-old Joshua Prince, who is considered armed and on the run.

According to investigators, Prince came the Avalon apartment complex just off of Rockledge Drive about 7:15 a.m. was armed with a high-power rifle. He shot at his ex-girlfriend as she walked through the parking lot.

No one was hurt.

One neighbor told ABC 7 News that the intended target ran door to door in the complex, pleading for someone to let her in. She told residents that 'somebody was trying to kill her,' the neighbor said.

Police say the woman had taken out peace a peace order against Prince on Saturday night.

The shooting -- nearly one week after the standoff at the Discovery Channel -- prompted a massive police response.

Officers briefly halted traffic on the western I-270 spur. It was quickly reopened.

Walter Johnson High School and Tilden Middle School went Code Blue, meaning the doors were locked to outsiders, but classes continued as normal inside. The Code Blue was lifted by 11 a.m.

Officers did not allow anyone to come or go from the neighborhood by car, leaving some to walk to work. Others waited until just after 10 a.m., when officers cleared the scene.

Meredith Brown works just across the street from the Avalon. She says it took her more than two and a half hours to get to work.

"Traffic is bad because of schools being in session, but then to add on this -- it's just makes it even more difficult," Brown said.

Police are also searching for Prince's vehicle, a 2004 black Tahoe with Maryland tags, 27992M5

UPDATE 11 a.m.: Montgomery County Schools spokesperson Dana Tofig tells ABC 7 News that the code blue at Walter Johnson High School and Tilden Middle School has been lifted.

UPDATE 10:02: Police say the suspect is Joshua Prince, 32, and may be armed with a high-powered rifle. Suspect may have fled in a 2004 black Chevy Tahoe with Maryland tag 27992M5, police say. No one should approach the suspect, but should call 911 if the vehicle is seen.

ABC 7 reports that there are two armored trucks on site and they are not allowing neighbors to drive out. Neighbors are only allowed to walk out and no one is allowed to walk in. Neighbors say they have seen a team of officers in front of one of the apartments. Maryland State Police is also on the scene.

Montgomery County police confirm that they are working on a domestic situation at I-270 between Rockledge and Old Georgetown, where the ramp is closed. A man reportedly fired a gun at his ex-girlfriend.

No one was hit, but he may still be in the area. Emergency response was called out and they are searching the area. As a result, Walter Johnson High School is on code blue status — the doors to the building are locked and school carries on as usual.

Police say the incident is not random, but domestic in nature.
