10:59 11:00 fast approaches, which means it's time for that fancy Twitter gagdet to take over for me. Keep tweeting your tweets into the world, and have a good night. Consider knocking on some doors in Shaw - Amanda Hess is hiding behind one of them with some divine lemon and ginger cupcakes. Maybe she'll share.
10:54 More quiet bars: Mackey's. The WVU crowd is "dead quiet."
10:51 Uh-oh. Lots of police and fire trucks in Dupont, says Elahe Izadi. More to come.
10:50 Baby Klingons cry, just like regular babies.
10:44 BABY KLINGON
10:39 FINALLY
Maura Judkis has located a Klingon at Klingon Shakespeare.
10:33 The bandleader of DC United Barra Bravo section has just show up at the Science Club in Dupont. Also, TBD reader questions his ability to be able to stay awake for Saturday Night Live.
10:30 Markham Evans counts five open tables and one open sofa in front of Social on 14th St. in Columbia Heights. Well-spotted.
10:27 More concerned reports from FreeFest: a "mooostached" individual usurped Ryan Kearney's dancing space at the LCD show, preventing Kearney from completing his "thirtysomething half-hearted dancing." Also, glowsticks have been thrown and Tennessee Williams has been quoted.
10:12 Arlington Patio Update: still open tables on the patios at Liberty Tavern and Cafe Asia. A host at Liberty Tavern tells me that the crowd is "decent" but lighter than a typical Saturday night. And no line for the bathroom.
10:06 More bad Klingon news from Maura Judkis: there are neither Klingons nor appetizers at Klingon after party.
10:04 UNCROWDED BAR UPDATE
Reports coming in of two uncrowded bars. Ceiba on 14th is "has lots of room by the bar" says the hostess, and they're serving half-priced food at the bar until close. Paolo's in Georgetown is "still pretty laid back" right now, says Rebecca Cooper. Yah for finding chairs at bars.
9:55 SHOCKING NEWS: Georgetown experiencing gridlock traffic.
9:40 Dupont Update: Three cops handling a traffic stop in front of the Science Club, reports @dmbosstone. Elahe Izadi says there's absolutely no wait at Giovanni's. Why is Dupont only uncrowded when I am not there? Sigh.
9:30 FreeFest updates:
* TBD staff devastated by lack of Miller Lite
* MIA goes on stage late and is not wowing the crowd. Maybe because she opened by saying to them: "Fuck you."
9:21 Tough waits out in Bethesda for a table: 1-1.5 hours at American Tap Room and more than an hour at Mussel Bar. Go to Logan!
9:17 Problems on the Orange line: delays, track maintanence, misleading wait times. Take caution. Or cabs.
9:08 Wemple update: Logan Tavern soup of the day: turkey vegetable. Try "killer special" braised short ribs. There are still some tables available.
9:07 Ryan Kearney regains ability to tweet at sight of fireworks.
9:06 Whoa! Pyrotechnics during Pavement show.
9:03 Lots of outdoor seating at Commonwealth in Columbia Heights!
9:01 When Metro's failure is your success: Adams Morgan/McPherson Square Circulator not taking SmarTrip. Free rides all around!
8:58 Stoney's has plenty of room and good specials: Hawaiian burger, blackened Tilapia, and clam chowder. Look at all those chairs!
8:54 Wemple, TBD's eyes and ears in Logan tonight, reports the following:
* Free cupcakes (!) in front of Lululemon.
* Summer temps, but no summer crowds at Logan's Pitango.
* Crowd at Commissary just right--not packed, not deserted.
* Nine burger varieties at Commissary.
8:42 Erik Wemple reports no line at Logan Sweetgreen.
8:43 Pavement announces part two of a song: "It's kind of like Pink Floyd or something."
8:39 SUBWAY UPDATE: Clarendon Subway (that would be the eat-fresh sandwich shop, not a reference to D.C.'s public transit) is "actually crowded for a Saturday night." Avoid.
8:31 Another Washingtonian chooses Subway tonight. There appears to be no shortage of roast beef.
8:22 For Matchbox 20 and UFC lovers: Ugly Mug on Capitol Hill is serving $7 nachos alongside $4 Yuenglings and $5 SoCo and lime shots. Bear in mind that the UFC fight will be broadcast shortly, and a Matchbox 20 song is on the radio. Thanks for the tip, Sarah Larimer.
8:19 Ryan Kearney reports difficulty tweeting from FreeFest due to Pavement taking him back to high school, when there was no Twitter. More to come.
8:14 Miso udon at Ariake in Reston. Looks a lot better than the Hostess cupcake I just ate.
8:11 Check out Lola's on Barrack's Row for moderate crowds, moderate noise, and unsticky floors. The patio is open and there are no terrible sports fans.
8:07 ![]()
PS7 Restaurant on Eye Street is serving mirin-glazed sable fish and mushroom wantons. No wait!
In somewhat disappointing news, Maura Judkis reports that no one is dressed as a Klingon at Klingon Shakespeare. Plenty of "nerdy dudes" on hand, but nary a Klingon. There is a Klingon dictionary on hand, though.
8:03: BREAKING NEWS: Sarah Godfrey wants to "roll out" after hearing Ludacris at FreeFest.
8:00 Catch of the day at Ted's Bulletin: wild sockeye salmon. Comes with a citrus mustard sauce. Chef Eric Brannon says wild sockeye salmon is going out of season soon, so fans of the fish: GET IN TO TED'S PRONTO. Also, no wait.
7:57 For those who save their grocery shopping for Saturday night, the Social Safeway is "not so hopping." Thanks for the tip, Steve Chaggaris.
7:52 UNCROWDED BAR REPORT: From now until 11, enjoy a $5 martini at uncrowded Ozio on M St. The house recommends the French martini for a sweet tooth and the Stockholm 75 for something "crisp." No wait for dinner.
7:49 Coming soon: Maura Judkis reports on Klingon Shakespeare. STAY TUNED.
7:46 No wait for sushi at Ariake Japanese Restaurant in Reston. And you can see TBD's Steve Buttry out on a date with his wife.
7:44 Tonight, Pour House has $3 Miller Lite and Blue Moon, $5 chicken tenders platters (!!!), and a lot of rowdy Univ. of Florida fans. Sarah Larimer's advice: AVOID.
7:34 Tickets still available to see Todd Agnew out in Woodbridge. Probably more family-friendly than whatever is going on at Freefest.
7:30 More from @kevin_reiss on the upscale Subway he patronized this evening: "Definitely on the fancy end of places you couldd take a date that would also signify how unimportant you think the relationship is." Will keep that in mind next time I want to send a message but also enjoy a fine sandwich.
7:26 More updates from Capitol Hill dining scene: We, The Pizza patrons are experiencing hot temperatures on the bottom floor. Troubling. But Sarah Larimer reports that she got in, got her pizza, enjoyed some chit chat, and got out in 40 minutes. Apple Cider is the soda on special, through Larimer remains confused as to whether it is "actual apple cider or some fake soda version of it."
7:22 Depressed Texas fans are drowning their sorrows at Rhodeside Grill in Clarendon after loss to UCLA, reports Rebecca Cooper.
7:18 For a more casual, less claustrophobic dining option, consider the Subway across from the Eisenhower Ave. Metro station. @kevin_reiss says it's empty. And it's one of those fancy Subways with gelato and HD TV.
7:12 BREAKING NEWS: Perpetually packed Matchbox in Capitol Hill is "not as busy as we usually are," says a hostess. Expect at most a 20-25 minute wait for a party of four, she says. If you're still looking for a dinner spot, get in there while you can.
7:09 Reports of drunk dudes yelling "Looo-da!" at FreeFest.
7:05 Half-priced drinks at Madam's Organ in Adams Morgan until 8.
7:01 Wait time for a party of 2-4 at Gordon Biersch in Rockville is 45 minutes.
6:57 HAPPY HOUR UPDATE: The 7:00 hour draws to a close, but plenty of good drink specials still going on around town. For the next hour, Clarendon Grill has $1.75 Miller and Bud Lite, and Uptown Tavern is offering half-priced appetizers in Cleveland Park.
6:53 BATHROOM UPDATE: Andrew Beaujon reports from FreeFest that the "giant chicken" mens room still has plenty of soap and paper towels and no wait. Someone, however, "just took a shit" in there. Proceed with caution.
6:45 Woodbridge: Todd Agnew & Pocket Full of Rocks performing at First Baptist Church tonight. Checking to see if there are still tickets available.
6:42 Ryan Kearney reports: "SUNSET."
6:31 BREAKING PORTAPOTTY UPDATE: the facilities at the dance tent at FreeFest are NOT TO BE TRUSTED. "No woman should go in there right now," says festival-goer Danny, via Sarah Godfrey.
6:27 Checking in with TBD's Sarah Larimer on Capitol Hill: Union Pub is already at 90 percent capacity in anticipation of the Nebraska game, which will be shown at 8. Do not underestimate the athletic allegiance of Cornhuskers. If you can brave the crowd and the "loud" environment, buckets of Bud or Miller are $11. Also of note: floors are not sticky.
6:20 Thinking about going to Pentagon City? DON'T. Metro's a mess. If you're already out that way, pop by Crystal City Sports Bar (a few blocks from Metro station). One staffer tells me that they're offering specials to anyone who presents an "alumni card" from any college. I do not have an "alumni card." I cannot have the specials. But you lucky card-holders can!
6:13 Thievery Corp receiving mixed reviews at FreeFest.
6:10 Chinatown Coffee employee Max confirms report of "awesome crowd." Though "nothing out of the ordinary" is happening, Max says, patrons are indeed having a good time and enjoying the lobster truck outside. NOTE OF CAUTION: bathroom line is "fairly long."
6:05 "Awesome crowd" reported at Chinatown Coffee. More to come on this developing story.
5:58 REPORTED: UNCROWDED BAR. Bread and Brew in Dupont reports being "not crowded," despite their wonderful all-night deals on rail drinks ($3), drafts ($1!!), and tequila shots ($2). Staff member Terri anticipates a heavier crowd by nine, so go get a good seat now. Terri promises "lots of funny things" as the night progresses at Bread and Brew.
5:51 CITIZENS OF FAIRFAX: you have eight more minutes to order a $4.99 burger at P.J. Skidoos. Scoot!
5:49 Concerned reports are coming from FreeFest about a "nasty throw pillow being tossed about like a beach ball." Ally Schweitzer fears for the cleanliness of it all.
5:47 Metro, you are ruining everything. Sommer Mathis reports "epic" delays on the Yellow line - took an hour to get from L'Enfant to National Airport.
5:42 Arts editor Andrew Beaujon captures the frenzied crowd during Joan Jett's performance at FreeFest. Should these people look more excited to be seeing Joan Jett? I mean, she WAS played by Kristen Stewart.
5:36 No TBD Night is complete without a mustached-van sighting. This one sits on 14th St. Thanks, Maura Judkis!
5:12 If you're out in Rockville, you have two more hours to enjoy the Taste of Town Square. The Jeff Carmella Band goes on at 6. "Jazz it up" as they say in Rockville...
5:08 Crime wins again in the District. TBD's Sarah Larimer just heroically attempted to stop a shoplifter at her local CVS. Well, by "tried to stop" I mean she told a clerk about it. Narc. The thief escaped with several items. She describes the experience as "very awkward." I suggest she relax at Bangkok Joe's in Georgetown and enjoy some appetizer specials, which started eight minutes ago. ($5 Thai wings!!!)
4:50 Metro riders, be nice: Sommer Mathis reports being shoved into a pole while exiting the train at L'Enfant. And this despite the low Nats attendance.
4:45 HAPPY HOUR UPDATE
Yes, there are happy hours on Saturdays! A few to consider for the remainder of the 4:00 hour:
* Sala Thai in Arlington is offering $2 drafts from 4-7.
* The Heights in Columbia Heights has wine specials starting at $3.25 from 4-7.
* Ben's Next Door on U St. has ribs for just five bucks, also from 4-7.
4:37 For Washingtonians not enjoying the pee-free floors at FreeFest this evening, the Red Hook Lobster Pound Truck is rolling into Chinatown around 6. Half-price wine, people.
4:34 Concerns that liquid by the bathroom at FreeFest might be pee are unfounded. Merely water fountain spillover.
4:28 Joan Jett is about to take the stage at FreeFest. Unfortunately, reports Sarah Godfrey, a youngster in the crowd has just asked, "Who is Joan Jett?" Godfrey helpfully points out that Kristen Stewart played her in a movie recently. I might add that Britney Spears lip-synced to a song of hers in Crossroads.
4:15 Yah, TBD Night is a go! We are only 15 minutes in and already updates are pouring in from FreeFest, the 17th Street Festival, and "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." (Snoopy is stealing at the show, reports Maura Judkis). Check back for breaking updates from restaurants, bars, and performances all over Washington and Tweet your observations of all things serious and trivial via #TBDNight.
