University of Maryland mugging victim speaks about ordeal
Two more robberies near the University of Maryland have police and students on high alert. ABC 7's Jay Korff spoke to one of the victims.
"Every week there's a new email about a robbery or someone getting mugged."
A rash of violent robberies near the University of Maryland's campus in College Park has police out in full force. Everyone is on alert, especially a 21-year-old man who does not want to be identified.
"It was kinda scary. I was just trying to remain cool and not to anything stupid to get myself shot," he told ABC 7.
He says Monday night at around 10:30 while walking home from a friends house along a paved path near Osage Street, two men confronted him.
"Put a gun up to my head and told me to give them all my money and told me not to look at them or they were gonna kill me," he remembered.
He obeyed and is grateful to have survived.
Prince George's County police say four minutes later, about two blocks away, another similar armed robbery.
Authorities are also investigating three eerily similar muggings dating back to Aug. 27 along the Route 1 corridor. They say in each case multiple suspects traveling together attacked and robbed a student or group of students.
Maryland senior Ameya Bhende, who lives very close to the latest attacks, knows all too well about crime in College Park.
"The back glass window was shattered," said Bhende.
Last fall, his place was burglarized and thousands of dollars in property were taken. Now, he wonders how this crime wave will impact his last year.
"It's scary. It makes you not want to go out at night," said Bhende.
Some arrests were made for the Aug. 27 robbery but because the muggings continue to happen, police are out in full force hoping to deter more crime.
