3rd Street Tunnel car fire: Smoke billows from burning vehicle

UPDATE 3:57 p.m.: The southbound lanes of the 3rd Street Tunnel have reopened, D.C. Fire and EMS reports.

D.C. Fire and EMS extinguished a fire in the 3rd Street Tunnel Thursday afternoon.
Crews were alerted by reports of heavy smoke from the southbound tunnel.
The tunnel's ventilation system is working to remove the smoke.
Travelers are warned to expect traffic issues in the area.
