Belmont Station Elementary fifth grade teacher Sean Griffin was so stunned, he lost his breath when he learned he won a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.

He said, "We have so many great teachers on our staff who have a lot more experience than I have with great success over a long period of time. I never thought it would be me and my name came and my heart was beating and just trying to walk without falling over."

Belmont Station Elementary students had filled the gymnasium for a mystery assembly that featured the state and county students. The entire staff was out of the loop and no one knew what to expect. But when the big secret was finally revealed, everyone was ecstatic.

The award have been dubbed "the Oscars of teaching." Since the program started back in 1987, more than $62 million in award money has been given to thousands of teachers across the country.

"It's very meaningful for me. Because I had great teachers when I was in school. I was always looking for a way to recognize the work they do so I get great personal satisfaction out of doing this," said Lowell Milken, with the Milken Family Foundation.

Immediately after the assembly, Griffin shared the news with his wife over the phone.

Griffin is known for a curriculum that integrates reading and social studies using popular song lyrics to help students engage with their lessons.

"he's just exceptional. He's a very modest, quiet, young man but his lessons inspire," said Principal Patricia McGinly.

The $25,000 prize comes with no strings attached. Co-workers say it will go a long way and that Griffin is anxious to buy a home and start a family.

Griffin said, "Twenty five thousand dollars, that's a lot of money...that hasn't sunk in yet. The gravity of the reward is just starting to sink in. I'm sure I'll find something for that though."
