Student resists arrest, maces police at Ballou High School (video)
Updated: October 7, 2010 - 07:03 pm
UPDATE from ABC 7 News at 5:00 by Julie Parker: A police officer was maced, a security guard was bitten, and a D.C. high school student is under arrest.
It all unfolded at Ballou High School this morning.
The student is being charged with assaulting a police officer. Four people went to the hospital -- including the student -- who police say brought his own mace into the school.
Just after classes began, D.C. police descended on Ballou. The call went out at about 9:45 a.m. as an aggravated assault on a police officer.
"We have little skirmishes and fights that go on, but nothing really violent -- or anything where a student resists to this degree," said Lt. Renato Caldwell.
Police took a pair of shoes and a backpack into evidence in connection with the alleged attack. Police say a Ballou student, a juvenile, walked into the building where police were waiting for him. They say he was wanted on a warrant for a probation violation in Virginia.
They say as they arrested him, he lashed out -- spraying a police officer with the student's own can of mace. They say he also assaulted a private security guard.
Students say their peers, who ran to see what was happening, walked right into the cloud of mace.
"They was breathing heavily, choking, their eyes was watering," said student Alexis Beckham. "... they got sent home."
A second security guard also went to the hospital for the residual effects of mace. All four patients have now been released.
The student remains in police custody.
