2 Spingarn High School students shot, 1 dies
Spingarn High School students and teachers mourned Tuesday for 17-year-old Joseph Sharps Jr., who was shot and killed Monday night in the 1300 block of Holbrook Street NE.
A number of parents came to get their kids who didn't want to stay at school when they learned of the Spingarn senior's death.
Police said three people approached Sharps and another Spingarn student around 8:45 p.m. Monday in Trinidad. One of the people had a handgun and started shooting. The other student was shot in the leg; police say his injuries are not life-threatening.
Sharps played sports at school. He dreamed of being a poet and going to New York University. "I don't think I can take any more," said Sharps' brother, Adrian Kinard. "And my father is ripped apart."
One teacher said she scrapped the day's lesson plan and had students write poetry instead.
