Squirrel causes power outage in Vienna
February 17, 2011 - 10:54 am
VIENNA, Va. (AP) - A wayward squirrel has caused thousands of power outages in Vienna.
Dominion Power spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson says a squirrel scampered onto a transformer at a substation and interrupted the flow of electricity, causing about 2,700 customers to lose power.
It happened around 7 a.m. Thursday. Several traffic lights were affected in the heart of Vienna, leading to traffic problems. Police asked drivers to avoid the area.
Anderson says there were still about 1,700 outages shortly after 10 a.m. but that equipment repairs at the substation were almost complete.
The squirrel did not survive.
