1,100 backpacks on UMd. campus symbolize college suicides in America
March 30, 2011 - 09:34 pm
It was an emotional scene in College Park today.
As a moving exhibit on suicide came to the University of Maryland campus today, students were dealing with the news on the front page of their newspaper that a classmate had apparently committed suicide during his trip back to school from his home in New York.
Laid out on the campus were 1,100 backpacks, one for each college student who commits suicide in America each year.
A DC organization called Active Minds is taking the exhibit to major U.S, cities, where they invite students to read victims' stories and to talk honestly about suicide.
ABC7's Gail Huff was on campus today. She talked with friends and family members of some of the local students who have committed suicide.
