Fairfax resident back in Libya leading the rebellion
March 31, 2011 - 12:01 am
According to ABC News and other published reports, Khalifa Haftar, who lived in Fairfax County for the past 20 years, is now one of the men coordinating the anti-government uprising in Libya.
Haftar recently travelled to Libya from his home in Fairfax County to command the rebel army.
His story is rich in redemption. Once a top military leader, Haftar fell out of favor with Muammar Gadhafi after Libya lost a long and sporadic war with Chad in the late 1980s.
He fled in exile to America, taking up residence somewhere in Fairfax County.
Now he's back in Libya working to liberate the nation.
ABC7's Jay Korff says one published report suggested the CIA was involved in relocating Haftar to the U.S.
