Kevin Ricks, former Manassas teacher, pleads guilty to making child porn
A former Osbourn High School teacher who earlier pleaded guilty to molesting a former student has now admitted to three decades of victimizing children in two countries.
Kevin Ricks, 50, pleaded guilty Thursday to six counts of production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The plea agreement calls for a sentence of 25 years, which will formally be handed down on May 27, 2011.
At his plea hearing Thursday, Ricks admitted "he is a dangerous, serial predator who sexually assaulted teenage boys for more than 30 years, literally across the globe," said U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride. "This case is a chilling reminder to parents and kids that the face of evil is often the familiar and the everyday, and even a seeming respected role model."
The FBI Special Agent in Charge of the case, Debra Evans Smith, added, "Mr. Rick's is a career child predator who shattered many innocent lives over a period of three decades."
Ricks admitted to engaging in illegal sexual contact with boys dating back to his time as a junior camp counselor at Camp Holiday Trails near Charlottesville, Va., in 1979. The abuse continued through his college years in North Carolina, and when Ricks moved to Japan to teach English in 1988, he admitted. Ricks returned to the U.S. in 1995 and began hosting male foreign exchange students.
Ricks began teaching in Manassas in 2007. He later admitted to engaging in sexually explicit conduct with a 16-year-old former student after getting the boy drunk with beer and approximately 10 shots of tequila in December 2009. He later pleaded guilty to state charges of indecent liberties and was sentenced to serve a year in prison. He has been locked up since his arrest in February 2010.
