Georgetown student sexually assaulted
A Georgetown student was sexually assaulted Saturday as she was about to enter her residence off campus in the 1300 block of 35th Street.
The Department of Public Safety reported an unknown man attacked the student when she was retrieving her keys from her purse at about 2 a.m.
The student fended off the attacker, who was last seen fleeing north on 36th Street.
“They say the usual, be careful, but you'd expect an area like Georgetown would be much safer,” said student Ceyda Erten.
Georgetown University and MPD officers patrol the area. IN addition, there are emergency boxes and the school offers shuttles for safety escorts.
But it’s easy when your address is Georgetown to let your guard down.
“I never walk home alone,” said student Leah Volk. “If that means staying out a half hour later and walking back with a friend, then I think that's a smart decision because, I mean, just never walk home alone at night.”
