Proposed Outer Beltway highway would connect 95, Dulles Airport
For commuters driving on crowded Route 15 and Belmont Road between Loudoun and Prince William Counties, the proposed Outer Beltway has been a longtime goal. Now, its presence on a Commonwealth "corridors of significance" list may mean that the project would finally be realized, WTOP reports.
Although the project has not been advanced beyond the concept stages - no money or resources have yet been assigned - the project is not new. In the 1950s, the first incarnation of an outer loop of the Beltway appeared, and was an active propsal until the 1980s, when it was shelved.
The project has come under fire. The Coalition for Smarter Growth criticized the project, saying it would "destroy the historic landscape on the western boundary of Manassas Battlefield," and that the project "would not solve our traffic problems - it would actually make them worse."
