Alexandria hotels plan would increase density on waterfront
May 13, 2011 - 07:46 am
A development plan in Alexandria is drawing fire from critics who fear a major change in the city's layout, WAMU reports.
The city council will vote on the Robinson Terminal development plan, in addition to two other sites. The plans for the development include hotels and higher-rise buildings.
Critics charge that taller buildings would turn the waterfront into Crystal City, a dense suburban environment a few miles to the north. Supporters, however, point out that allowing the developments would give the city more funds to pay for amenities.
Robinson Terminal is a small port that can accommodate passenger ships and moderate amounts of freight.
