WASHINGTON (AP) — The District of Columbia's attorney general says his office is investigating allegations that a regional gas station mogul is engaging in anticompetitive practices.

Attorney General Irvin Nathan said Wednesday that the antitrust division of his office has an active probe into Capitol Petroleum Group of Springfield, Va., and is prepared to issue subpoenas if necessary.

The company owns, operates or supplies 164 gas stations in the D.C. region and is headed by Ethiopian immigrant Eyob "Joe" Mamo. The Washington City Paper reported in February that Mamo owns more than 40 percent of the filling stations in the district.

Nathan says his office will do everything it can to keep gas prices down and ensure there is a competitive market.
