MPD releases new statement on Sheen escort, says look at the old statement
The Associated Press this week reported that actor Charlie Sheen wasn't the only celebrity to receive police escorts in the District. Bill Gates, Taylor Swift, and Jay-Z also traveled around the city with the help of MPD, which had previously stated that Sheen's escort to the DAR Constitution Hall earlier this year went against the department's protocol.
On Wednesday evening, a police spokesman released a statement about the AP article. It read:
Statement on Police Escort in Regards to AP Article
I have received many new inquires regarding the article about other police escorts from the Associated Press. My statement that was released on April 22, 2011 has not changed in light of this article. Our written policy has not changed since April 22, 2011. Please use the link below to view the statement again.
The statement (which did include a link to the previous release on the issue) doesn't clear up or reveal much, except that MPD hasn't changed it's policy in the weeks since the Sheen story broke. But that wasn't even really the question here, right?
“How many conflicting explanations have we gotten from officials regarding what is the truth?” D.C. Councilmember Phil Mendelson told the AP. “The most damning thing is the stories have been inconsistent.”
There might be more information coming out. Earlier this month, Lanier told WTOP that MPD is looking into the Sheen escort and some details of that investigation have already trickled out.
"Is it possible that [officers would] violate policy do this?" Lanier said, adding that she thought a middle manager in the department was responsible for the escort. "Absolutely. Police officers are people like everybody else."
Sheen's escort drew media attention after he tweeted "in car with Police escort in front and rear! driving like someone's about to deliver a baby! Cop car lights #Spinning!" His tweet, which was later deleted, also included a picture that showed the car was traveling about the speed limit.
