Red line has trouble with red lights

Two Metro operators ran through red signals, in separate incidents, in April and May, WTOP reports.

Both the April 20 and May 6 incidents occurred on the red line in the Brentwood Rail Yard, near the Rhode Island Avenue station. Although there were no injuries or damage, running a red signal may cause irreparable harm.

“Any red signal violation is a concern to us,” Ken Sundberg, Metro’s assistant chief safety officer, tells WTOP. “However, this is a prime location where it would happen and cause the least amount of impact to us.”

The way the rail yard is engineered may be a reason for the incidents, Sundberg says. “The particular signal is a little bit different tan most of our signals in that it is on the left-hand side of the operators cab, as opposed to the right-hand side."
