Snakehead Week: Crime and punishment edition
Attention fishmongers: if you want to stay out of the bighouse, don't even think about coming near the notorious snakehead fish, which was caught near White’s Ferry, according to a report in the Loudoun Times-Mirror this past week.
It's not against the law to hook and kill one of these toothy freshwater monsters, which have been classified as an invasive species, but selling or importing a live snakehead could land you in hot water.
Need the proof? Fine. Here's some examples of northern snakehead offenders who were pinched in fishy situations.
------------------------------
Incident Date: April 2011
Location: New York
Accused culprit: Yong Hao Wu, a 43-year old fish importer
Case file: Authorities believe Wu illegally imported hundreds of snakeheads before he was arrested, according to a news release. A tank of 82 snakehead fish was discovered in his company, Howei Trading Inc., when officers searched the property.
Authorities made the arrest after tracking a shipment that had been declared as Chinese black sleeper fish to Wu's company in Brooklyn.
Conclusion: Wu is due back in court later this month. He faces a four-year stint in prison, if convicted.
