Video: Councilmembers tussle over Ward borders
May 26, 2011 - 05:14 pm
The process of realigning the District's eight wards in concert with the tumult of the 2010 Census is a fractious undertaking. People take a liking to their wards, not to mention the councilmembers that they elected to office. Plenty of residents of storied Ward 6, for instance, don't want to become part of Ward 7 or Ward 2, and vice versa.
The tensions go all the way to the top, as this video demonstrates. Hit play and watch Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry tussle with At-Large Councilmember Michael A. Brown. The audio is cut by council staffers at one point.
The immediate point of contention appears to be parliamentary. The less immediate point of contention is race, class, geography, and urban identity. Enjoy the show.
