Virginia ticket blitz traps thousands
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia State Police says a two-day crackdown netted 5,814 summonses and arrests along Interstates 95 and 81.
The agency says troopers cited drivers for 3,102 violations along Interstate 81 between the state's borders with West Virginia and Tennessee on Sunday and Monday. Troopers also arrested 21 people. More than 1,700 speeders were stopped.
The agency says troopers issued 2,712 citations and made 13 arrests along Interstate 95. Troopers also netted more than 1,100 speeders along the highway between the state's borders with Maryland and North Carolina.
More than 200 citations were issued for safety belt violations along both interstates.
The agency has conducted 34 such operations since 2006. Arrests and citations total more than 171,000 over that stretch.
