Bus crash: Feds to crack down on 'reincarnated bus carriers'
The government is beginning to crack down on bus companies that have been shut down, but simply move to another location and start running again.
The loophole allows the bus operators to seemingly continue without making any real changes, Bill Bronrott, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration deputy administrator, told WTOP. All the need to do is change their address, paint the buses, and get a new Department of Transportation number.
Sky Express, the operator of the bus that crashed in Virginia, killing four, recorded 46 violations in the past two years.
Bronrott is pushing Congress the authority to go after these resurrected carriers. In the meantime, be wary of bus companies that seemingly appear overnight, and check the federal DOT website for safety records.
