D.C. red light cameras popular with residents
June 30, 2011 - 10:58 am
The red light cameras may be a pest for some motorists trying to sneak through that yellow, but despite getting the ticket in the mail weeks later, they're pretty popular around here. A new poll by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the cameras are most popular among D.C. drivers.
The study asked motorists in 14 U.S. cities their opinion on the cameras. D.C. topped the list, with 78 percent of respondents saying they approved. (Long Beach, Calif. was at the bottom of the list, with a minority liking the cameras. Go figure.)
Why are the cameras so popular? District residents say the devices cause drivers to be more aware, despite being ripped from the pages of "1984."
