Lyme disease: Not always from a tick

Lyme disease can be contracted other ways besides the most common, which is a tick bite.

Cara Lee, 18, of Mount Airy, Md., told WAMU that she suffers from Lyme disease but it wasn’t from a tick bite. It was from her mother.

Though she’s not 100 percent sure, Lee’s mom, Diane Wimsett, says the doctor thinks that Wimsett could have given it to her daughter. What’s interesting is Wimsett didn’t know that she had it.

It is possible to contract the disease “in utero,” according to some doctors.

Now both women are trying to live regular lives, but that can be draining sometimes. Lee has to take 40 pills a day, and the family struggles with paying for the treatments and medical care they both need.
