Maryland, Virginia plan HOV lane crackdowns
June 14, 2011 - 08:08 am
Virginia and Maryland are planning a ticketing blitz aimed at drivers violating the HOV lane.
Police will be patrolling the HOV lanes — I-95/395, I-66 and the Dulles Toll Road in Virginia; I-270 and U.S. 50 in Maryland — and aggressively ticketing violators.
The fines are quite large, especially in Virginia. Drivers there will have to fork over $125 for the first violation, with fines doubling every subsequent violation. Drivers are also awarded three points for each violation after the first.
In Maryland, the fines are a bit lighter. Each violation costs $90, and will be penalized one point.
This isn't your best week to play around with the HOV lanes.
