Government workers have awesome job security

This is your life, and then you die. (Photo: TBD Staff)

What's the best job to have right now? Working for the government, where you're almost guaranteed never to get fired. In fact, you're more likely to die.

Of the 2.1 million government workers, only 11,668 were fired last fiscal year — just over one-half of 1 percent of the workforce, a USA Today analysis found. The Small Business Administration fired six employees last year, out of a 4,000-strong staff; meanwhile, 17 employees died. The FCC and FTC, with 3,000 employees between them, didn't fire or lay off a single one.

Most workers are let go within their first two years on the job, when they're on probation and aren't yet protected. The numbers might also be skewed by under-performing employees who have quit before getting the ax.

But, for those of you given to schadenfreude, consider that next month these securely employed federal workers might not be out of a job, exactly, but out of work. Which, come to think of it, doesn't sound so bad after all.
