D.C. Mayor Vince Gray announced today that Christopher Murphy will be his new chief of staff, with Andrea "Andi" Pringle serving as deputy chief.

If the name Pringle sounds familiar — especially to residents in Ward 8 — it's because her consulting firm, Pringle Communications Group, was responsible for a racially charged, award-winning mailer sent to residents during last year's mayoral race. It featured the face of a black woman on the front and the line, "Tuesday is election day and you're not invited," imploring voters to choose Gray over then-Mayor Adrian Fenty. Before starting her firm, Pringle was a political adviser and, from 2003-4, the deputy campaign manager for Howard Dean for America.

Murphy, a Georgetown Law grad, may be less controversial. He was the deputy chief of staff at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Before his stint at HUD, he served as general counsel for Atlantic Media, and before that as executive director of City Year.

Pringle appears to be on Twitter, but we couldn't find Murphy there. We are drawing no conclusions from this.
