Northern Virginia basketball team is probably no worse than Wizards
As much as we'd all like to spend thousands of dollars on season tickets to watch a professional basketball team that loses twice as often as it wins, perhaps in these trying economic times we should consider a more frugal league, like the American Basketball Association, which now has a local team called the NoVA Wonders.
The Wonders, which will begin play this November in Chantilly (at the Northern Virginia Sportsplex), join some 90 other teams across the country in the ABA, the Post reports. The ABA, not to be confused with the league that merged with the NBA in 1976, is known for its tri-color basketball and wacky rules, such as:
The newest rule innovation is the 3-D Rule light, which goes on when a team steals the ball in the backcourt. If the team stealing the ball scores when the light is on, it gets an extra point. A regular basket becomes a three-pointer; a three-pointer is worth four.
Players can’t foul out. But after six fouls, the shooting team keeps possession of the ball. Players can’t “back down,” dribbling with their back to the basket below the free throw line, for more than three seconds. In overtime, there are NO time-outs (yay!). In the second overtime, the first team to score 10 points is the winner. Shots from beyond half court are worth four points.
The Wonders just held their second tryout this past Saturday. Linwood Boxley, 21, of Fredericksburg, told the Post, “Just trying to live out my dream. Dreams only die when you stop trying to make ‘em reality.”
Ticket prices aren't yet listed on the Wonders' website, but since all ABA teams have a salary cap of $100,000, we're going to assume a ticket is no more than the price of a beer at the Verizon Center. And hey, with the Wonders you might actually get to see the hometown team win.
