Record number of people on food stamps
August 15, 2011 - 06:30 pm
The number of people on food stamps has reached an all time high: A record 45.8 million received food stamps from in May, one out of every seven people.
Manna food center in Maryland provides families with 70 pounds of food every 30 days.
“Any growth that the economy is feeling, the folks here at Manna are not feeling that yet,” the center’s Natalie Corbin told CNN.
Grocery stores in the area send Manna food that is close to its sell-by date. Donations, food drives and state and federal emergency food grant programs also help feed the hungry at the center.
Find out more at the center's website, mannafood.org.
