Alexandria City Council wants 'Old Town' added to King Street Metro station

Some Alexandria City Council members believe Old Town isn't attracting as many tourists as it should be, and that the name of their Metro stop is to blame. Now, even though WMATA is trying to shorten station names, there's a push to add "Old Town" to the King Street station, a move that would cost $120,000.
"I can understand why, you know, if you're a tourist visiting the Washington area, and you want to come to Old Town and you get on the Metro system, you don't know where to go," Vice Mayor Kerry Donley tells WAMU.
Six out of 7 council members want both names to appear on maps and signs, but the lone dissenter, Councilwoman Alicia Hughes, says the money would be better spent fixing broken escalators. With nearly one in five of them out of service, she might have a point.
