D.C. medical marijuana applicants to be narrowed down this week

The competition to become one of 15 marijuana growers and sellers in D.C. is heating up this week — like cannabis under a lamp, ha — as the Department of Health is set to name about 50 approved applicants. "Gone is the sound technician who wanted to sell cannabis-infused cupcakes," the Post reports. "And gone is the hydroponics supply store owner who once named a strain of pot after the Potomac River."
But famous people? Some are still in it. Here are a few well-known applicants, and their odds of getting a license.
—
Who: Montel Williams
Famous for: hosting a daytime talk show, canceled in 2008, that had some questionable guests. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, and has since proudly stated that he spokes pot every day.
Odds: 2-1. He was born and raised in Maryland, and has been on teevee. In normal circumstances, that would be enough. But Williams' Abatin Wellness Center, which already operates in Sacramento, Calif., has something going for it other than a famous face — lobbying from Marion Barry's longtime lawyer, Frederick Cooke.
—
Who: Montgomery Blair Sibley
Famous for: descending from "some of the most powerful families in Washington history"; representing the D.C. Madam; suing the Supreme Court for treason — twice.
Odds: 4-1. As an attorney, Sibley knows how to navigate legal minutiae in D.C. Then again, he hasn't always done it flawlessly, having been suspended from practicing law in D.C. for three years.
—
Who: Benjamin Bronfman
Famous for: being M.I.A.'s fiancé, man about town.
Odds: 24-1. We're calling him the "comeback kid," since we thought his campaign was over. Apparently, he's still in the running.
—
Who: Joey Belcher and Jason Martin
Famous for: owning H Street restaurant Sticky Rice, which is famous for its tater tots, which, in turn, are famously delicious while stoned. But yeah, not as famous as the other people listed here.
Odds: 11-1. Don't discount the importance of fried food for people suffering from severe, chronic munchies.
