Larry Deffenbaugh, Maryland man who faked death, gets seven years in prison
September 19, 2011 - 04:38 pm
A Maryland man who faked his own death to avoid jail has landed back in the slammer, and he's going to be there a lot longer than he would've been otherwise.
Larry Deffenbaugh jumped into the Chesapeake Bay near Virginia Beach in 2009, two days before he was scheduled for sentencing in a Maryland court for a probation violation. It took a year, but he was found in Texas using a different name, the AP reports.
Convicted in May on counts of conspiracy and communicating a false distress signal, he was sentenced to seven years in federal prison — a term that amounts to a death sentence, he said in court today, apparently without irony.
