Washington Monument repairs to last through winter
September 23, 2011 - 02:17 pm
The Washington Monument, which was cracked — but not tilted! — by last month's earthquake, and further damaged by Hurricane Irene, will be closed and under repair through the winter, WTOP reports.
Carol Johnson, a spokesperson with the National Park Service, says the engineering firm has finished its assessment of the damage to the monument's interior, but not its exterior, from the Aug. 23 earthquake that shook the region.
'They're putting together a report on that as we speak,' Johnson says.
So the repairs haven't even begun? Oh dear, this is going to take a while.
