Haunted yard in Silver Spring draws neighbors' ire

A haunted yard in Silver Spring is stirring up more than ghosts this Halloween. The house has become an attraction, drawing hundreds of people to take a peek, which has led to neighborhood complaints.

From zombies to corpses, the haunted garden is quite a sight. The full effect can be witnessed when it opens to the public at night.

“The perfect age group is probably anywhere from 7-12, they say they're not scared, but then you hear them screaming in the woods,” said Rania Peet, who designed the haunted garden.

Led by owner Donna Kerr, the Pure Energy Real Estate team enjoys the holiday and decided to take it to the next level.

“It's just another manifestation of our commitment to community, and our creatively inspired marketing approach...so we really enjoy the season and it gives us a chance to do something for the community,” Kerr said.

Some neighbors say that their biggest fright isn't so much the spooky decorations but the parking nightmare it creates on the narrow roads when hundreds of visitors stop by.

“They were parking on both sides of the street last year, so I guess because of that a lot of complaints came out from it last year, so this year, they took care of that by putting signs up saying no parking on the right side of the street as you come up,” said Thomas Camp.

Camp lives nearby and says he's okay with the extra attention since it's temporary, and in good fun. Peet says she's been feeling the heat from others who want the event shut down.

“We've had the sound decibel people here, we've had the fire marshal here, we've had the fire department, the police, and we've passed every test with flying colors,” she said.

Based on the response so far, the plan may be to transform this backyard haunt into a large-scale operation.
