On Saturday, a man sexually assaulted a woman inside a Montgomery College library located on the school's Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus. "The victim was sitting in the library when the male subject walked past her and ejaculated on her arm," Takoma Park police announced in an advisory. "When the victim turned to the subject, he was standing behind her with his 'private parts' pulled out of his pants."
According to the announcement, the victim didn't recognize the assailant, but she "was able to get a good look at the subject before he fled the scene." She reported the incident to a receptionist, who called Takoma Park police and campus security. But as police were summoned, "the subject re-entered the area where the victim was standing and spoke to her and then fled again from the library."
Following the assault, campus security "chased the subject on foot through the campus," but lost him when he drove away in a maroon four-door sedan. According to police, "DNA evidence was obtained from the victim." I have calls out to Takoma Park police and Montgomery College campus security and will update this post as the story develops.
UPDATE, 2:15 p.m.: According to Montgomery College media relations director Elizabeth Homan, the victim of the sexual assault was a Montgomery College student. The assault occurred while the student was studying at a desk in the upper level of the library in the campus' Resource Center Building.
After the student reported the assault to a library employee, campus security spotted a man matching the suspect's description "fleeing the Resource Center." Security pursued the suspect through physical education building Falcon Hall, then saw the suspect enter his vehicle in a campus parking lot and fleeing the scene.
Montgomery College security took down the suspect's license plate, a vehicle description, and surveillance video of the scene, and turned them over to Takoma Park police.
Montgomery College sent a crime alert to students, faculty, and staff describing the incident at 9:39 a.m. this morning. Notices of the assault are also posted around campus. According to Homan, the college decided to wait until this morning to alert students by e-mail because the college was closed yesterday. Students are on-campus for classes today.
In the crime alert, the student is described as "African American, approximately 6’2” in height and weighs approximately 200 to 230 pounds." It's unclear whether the suspect is a student or an outsider using the library; the Montgomery College library is open to both students and the general public. "We're currently reviewing this incident, and taking another look at our security measures on campus," Homan says.
