SO the AOL-Huffington Post merger is a done deal. How is that working out for women? PLUS ONE: "Arianna Huffington is now the President and Editor In Chief of all of AOL’s media properties." MINUS ONE: "AOL has also poached a number of talented new writers to join its newly formed team. Yahoo’s Michael Calderone has been named Senior Media Reporter, the New York Times’ Trymaine Lee has been named Senior Reporter, the New York Daily News’ Michael McAuliff has been named Senior Congressional Reporter, and The Daily’s Jon Ward has been named Senior Political Reporter. Bonnie Kavoussi will be Business Reporter, and Lucas Kavner has been named Entertainment Reporter." The dearth of female hires is particularly conspicuous, given AOL CEO Tim Armstrong's stated target audience for the new venture: "With the acquisition, AOL is buying into the new publishing model that the Huffington Post represents. Armstrong has said that the the driving factors behind the deal is how well the Huffington Post fits into the content platform he is trying to build, particularly around women, influencers, and local."
AFTER THE JUMP: Debating the ethics of Dan Savage; talking"misandry"; "East coast rapist" apprehended:
THE "EAST COAST RAPIST," the man suspected of committing 17 attacks up and down the Atlantic coast over the past 12 years, has been apprehended. Aaron Thomas, 39, now faces five life sentences. Thomas' arrest hits close to home: "Prince William County police have also obtained warrants charging Thomas with two counts of rape, three counts of abduction and three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony for a Halloween 2009 attack on three teens."
AN INVESTIGATOR posing as a pedophile has nabbed Baltimore resident Calvin Allen. According to law enforcement sources, the investigator allegedly directed Allen to cross state lines into Washington, D.C. for the purposes of having sex with a 13-year-old boy. He faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for the sting.
TOMORROW, gay rights groups will hold a phone bank to support marriage equality in Maryland.
ON The Good Men Project today, feminists and men's rights activists debate the men's rights movement. Here's a particularly bizarre insight from MRA Paul Elam on misandry: "The same exact traits that lead men to put their lives at risk to protect women also lead men to rape them." OK. And taking the opposite approach, feminist Amanda Marcotte on misandry: "When you believe that we live in a female-dominated world where straight men are the most oppressed class, it tends to make you wrong about pretty much everything."
THE ETHICS of Dan Savage.
