Md. gay rights supporters do not 'like' Sam Arora on Facebook

Last week, same-sex marriage in the state of Maryland was a sure thing. Then, several Democratic legislators in the state backed down from their support of the marriage equality bill—but none so impressively as Sam Arora.

Arora, a freshman Delegate from Derwood, Md., managed to rally an impressive list of progressive donors, seek the endorsement of Equality Maryland, co-sponsor the same-sex marriage bill—and all before he suddenly began "thinking & praying" about how to actually cast his vote on the legislation last night. Arora's Facebook page is now flooding with previous supporters. And they're pissed! Apparently, getting a bunch of money from gay people to get elected to public office and then suddenly deciding you aren't sure you want to support their rights anymore is an unpopular political position. A sampling of messages to Arora, from gays and allies:

"Maybe the only thing worse than being a bigot is being a hypocritical lying bigot." —Stephen Clark

"Marriage equality WILL happen. A vote against it would forever have put you on the wrong side of civil rights. That will be your legacy, your shame." —Chris Fisher

Don't be confused about all the people suddenly 'Liking' your page. The only reason anyone is 'Liking' you all of the sudden is because that is the necessary first step to post on this page about how we will be working against you for the rest of your very short career." —Michael Dixon

"Dear Sam-Your future in democratic politics is over. Good luck with Brian Brown and NOM." —Matt Arnstine

"You have no integrity." —Susan Vargo

"If you wanted to support discrimination against gay people, you should have run as a conservative Republican. Instead, you ran as a progressive Democrat. Please keep your promise. . . . By the way, if you vote for discrimination, I look forward to donating to your next primary opponent." —David Chamberlain

"By making campaign promises that you don't intend to keep, for the sole purpose of raking-in donations from Progressive and LGBT-friendly voters, you represent the worst in American politics. Enjoy your one term." —Zach Stewart

"Our money is good enough for you, but our marriages are not. Reprehensible behavior. If your views have changed so radically, you owe it to the people who elected you to confess to them that you are not the man they elected, and step down." —Heather Sias

"Sam: Don't bother coming back to Montgomery County if you vote against the marriage bill. Your career is finished, and you did it to yourself. Someone may have convinced you that there's some political support for your view, but even bigoted anti-equality voters can smell a gutless, lying sack of shit weasel like you." —Jonathan Shurberg

I understand praying and thinking- but one would assume Arora did both those things before he ran as a progressive democrat. But he is proving that both thinking and praying are new to him and apparently it is the thinking part that is coming really hard. I hope his next employer won't require either.

Amanda, I thank you for giving me this information. Thanks to you, Mr. Arora has one more person "liking" him so that she (meaning me!) can bash him! I'm not looking to get married (ever), but I have friends who do want to get married. They shouldn't have to go to another state (or in most cases, DC) to get married. Our tax dollars are good enough for you... why not equal rights?
