The House Agricultural Committee finds itself between a rock and a hard place. On one side, Republicans clamor for cuts to a program that doubled in costs over the past four years. On the other, Democrats contend cuts to the annual $80 billion food stamp program will result in people going hungry.

The panel is still considering dozens of amendments that affect the sugar and dairy industries.
