Mark Zuckerman is reporting that Stephen Strasburg underwent successful Tommy John surgery today in Los Angeles. Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo announced the successful surgery prior to tonight's game between the Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"It went smooth and uneventful," Rizzo said of the procedure, which was done to replace a torn UCL in Strasburg's right elbow. The pitcher will now return home to San Diego, where he will begin physical therapy and be unable to pick up a ball for four months. He is expected to miss the entire 2011 season while recovering from the surgery.
