The American Farmland Trust’s annual vote to determine this nation’s preferred farmers markets launched this month. At the two-week mark, some surprising results.

Most FRESHFARM markets—some of the most competitive ones for vendors to break into—placed way at the bottom of the local standings. FRESHFARM’s Penn Quarter location garnered two votes; the White House location one; and the H Street, Bethesda, and Silver Spring locations none. Also clocking in with zero votes: Del Ray Farmers Market.

Former favorite market of America Falls Church and ever-popular FRESHFARM Dupont are in the top five with 15 and 12 votes apiece. At the top, two markets with less name recognition outside of their communities: Bethesda Central Farm Market with 25 votes and West End Farmers Market (Alexandria) with 23. Petworth Community Market, just in its second season, is in sixth place with 10.

Will dark-horse Petworth sneak in for the win? Will FRESHFARM rally its considerable fan base into casting votes? The Market Report will be monitoring the votes closely until polls close on August 31.
