Remembering the Freedom Rides; Council Chmn. Kwame Brown

Today on NewsTalk, we had a fascinating discussion with two area residents who took part in the 1961 Freedom Rides through the South. Rev. Reginald Green of the District and Joan Mulholland of Arlington were arrested five decades ago this week as part of a protest against public accommodations that weren’t open to people of all races. The protests, which often sparked violent reaction and led to the imprisonment of many who took part, forced the Kennedy administration to enforce laws that were being widely ignored in many places.

Our discussion with Rev. Green and Ms. Mulholland begins about halfway through the hour, and it’s well worth your time.

The first part of the show is our monthly sit-down with DC Council Chairman Kwame Brown.

Two blockbuster interviews today on NewsTalk.

In the first segment, we spoke with Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH, the nation’s leading researcher in the fight against HIV. Sunday marks thirty years since the discovery of a cluster of rare cases of pneumonia among gay men in Los Angeles, the start of what we now refer to as HIV. Fauci talks in detail about where we’ve come, the challenges we still face, and the prospects for further medical advances in the future.

Then we spoke with our NewsChannel 8 colleague Glenn Harris, who suffered two strokes in April. Glenn – a beloved NewsChannel 8 original – is doing remarkably well. In fact, he returns to the airwaves next week. We talked about what likely caused his strokes and how he’s doing now. When we opened the phone lines, many viewers called in to wish him well.
As we said, two very special interviews. If you missed them, by all means check them out here:
