When the curtain comes down at Wolf Trap on Legally Blonde the Musical’s final performance of its tour, it will mark the end of three whole years of perky, squeaky, bedazzled pink pep for star Becky Gulsvig.

Gulsvig has played Elle for the entire national tour, but she’s been with the show even longer: In its San Francisco previews in 2007, and then with the Broadway show, playing Leilani in both runs, and serving as Elle’s understudy. The show previewed for one month in San Francisco before debuting on Broadway for a total of 595 performances. Then, it went on tour in September 2008, and nearly two years of blonde ambition later, it’s about to come to an end.

So Gulsvig is in the final stretch, and naturally, she is looking forward to a break. After Wolf Trap, she’s headed back to New York to rest from her three years of playing what might be the most perky character to appear on stage in recent memory.

“It’s like any other job - you do it long enough, and some days are harder than others,” says Gulsvig. “The show works for itself once it starts even if i have to kick my butt to get in the spirit.”

It’s a show that she described as, “Full of heart in a bright pink sparkly package.” But after three years of wearing the same pink costumes, how sick is she of the color?

“Let’s just say we’ve come to an understanding,” she says, about the feminine hue. “I was never much of a pink girl anyway.”
