TBD Arts Roundup for Aug. 10
Good morning. Let's do it!
In the Style section of today's Washington Post, David Montgomery gives a nice history of celebrity politicians, using Wyclef Jean's run for president of Haiti as a springboard. Montgomery ponders whether Jean will be the next Ignace Padewski (pianist who became prime minister of Poland in 1919) or Rubén Blades (salsa singer who failed in his bid to become president of Panama in 1994).
No clue, but the celebrity run I'm most anticipating is that of D.C.-based rapper Tabi Bonney, who said yesterday that he would consider running for mayor of D.C. Or president of Togo. Whatever — either way, tight campaign songs are GUARANTEED.
After the jump: Counting Crows at Wolf Trap!
Yesterday's big live show was Counting Crows at Wolf Trap and Twitter straight blew up with reviews of the Traveling Circus and Medicine Show tour.
@K8Kennedy obviously had a great time, tweeting "Counting Crows is my jaaaaaaam." But @GlobalAttitude said "More Counting Crows and less Special Guests would be even better."
@acerook was annoyed by a fellow concert-goer unfamiliar with the CC songbook. "Girl behind me: 'oh fuck, I know this! It's Counting Crows!' Uhhhh where did you think you were, sweetheart?!?"
And in case those tweets don't give you a full picture of the show, there are ACTUAL pictures!
LOCAL NEWS: Area hip-hop group Gods'Illa made the Source! Say what you want about the diminished relevance of the Bible of Hip-Hop, making its pages is still a huge deal.
Fans of BET's 106th and Park (WHO ISN'T A FAN?) may have noticed DJ Quiksilva of local radio station WKYS behind the turntables yesterday. The "Where They Do That At?" jock appears on the video countdown show again this afternoon.
TODAY'S EVENTS: The excellent Chocolate City doc screens at Bloom Bars, Cold War musical Chess opens at Signature, and Green Day hits Jiffy Lube Live. LEAVE NOW IF YOU WANT TO GET THERE ON TIME.
That's all for today!!! Hope I've used enough exclamation points and caps for Andrew Beaujon's taste.
