Tom Oehser's go-go going out guide
This morning I wrote about Tom Oehser, the 48-year-old Brookmont resident who runs Gogobeat.com. As a dedicated show-goer, Oehser has strong opinions about the best go-go bands, shows, clubs, and even instruments. In the interest of helping others avoid overpriced drinks and overstuffed line-ups, Oehser runs through a few of his favorite things.
Favorite instrument:
"I mean I like congas. The instrument I'm best at is blues harmonica, Chicago-style blues harmonica. I can play sax sort of, I play congas a little bit, but non-go-go style. I'd like to spend more time with congas, I have a picture of me and congas on Gogobeat, but I'm not competent enough to play with a go-go band."
Favorite club:
"The Legend might be my favorite club. It has reasonably priced drinks, a DJ downstairs, it's good."
Favorite band:
"I think it's easier to speak in terms of bands that have disappointed me the least. Backyard has probably disappointed me the least. You know, I'm a backline person, so as long as Buggy and Sauce are there..."
Favorite show experience:
"I don't think in terms of best shows. I think of possible pluses and minuses. So it's like, When I'm gonna go out, I'll be like, 'OK it's at Le Pearl, the bar sucks, and it's an event space, so they've got a couple of bottles of vodka and charge $12 a drink.' Or, I'll think, 'Oh, it's at the Legend, they've got a good bar.'"
You know, when you think of the best show, you might think of special events, like Backyard, Junkyard and What? Band on some special Valentine's Day six-band extravaganza or something, but those aren't always the best shows. Those aren't always the ones that bring the best performances out of the bands. Sometimes they're trying to hard, sometimes there is too much going on, and sometimes the crowd is too tight — or uptight.
