Arianna Huffington to bus New Yorkers to Washington, D.C., for Stewart, Colbert rally
If you happen to live in Tulsa, Ron Honn's got you covered, but how are all those broke bumpkins living in faraway New York City going to make it all the way down to Washington, D.C., for Jon Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity" and Stephen Colbert's "March to Keep Fear Alive"? They were up Hudson Creek until yesterday, when new-media superhero Arianna Huffington appeared on Stewart's Daily Show wearing a red cape — or, debatably, a loose blouse — and announced, "We are getting a [inaudible Greek-accented word] bus, and if there is anybody here who is not sure how to get there — "
"That guy!" interrupted Stewart, pointing to an audience member off camera. "Where you coming from?"
"Manhattan."
"Oh for real? You don't know how to get to Washington from Manhattan?"
NOTE TO MR. STEWART: Some people in Manhattan don't know how to get to Queens, or even the Cloisters.
"Just come to the Huffington Post, 560 Broadway in SoHo," Huffington continued. "The bus will be there. We'll take you with us."
"Is that true?" asked Stewart. He wrote a note to himself, the joke being: He needs a ride. Ha.
"We'll have as many buses as there will be people to fill them. That's our promise."
[roaring applause]
Stewart said he's been trying help people from different locations get to D.C., "but we're a little bit clueless. I'm from the old school. I thought people carpooled. I don't understand, how do people meet up?"
"You dont have to worry about it. You just work on the message, I'll work on the logistics."
And those logistics are already underway. Twitter account? Check. Also, you can register for a bus seat here, but fair warning: You have to hand Huffington your soul first, by which I mean you have to register as a user. (What kind of progressive news website would do that?) It's a small price to pay, though, to be bussed to the Political-Humor Event of Our Time — for free, unless you consider tedious conversations lifted from N+1 to be a cost of sorts. The important thing is, the HuffPo Bus is not a $20 Bolt Bus ride that reeks of Arby's.
Actually, that's not the important thing. Said Huffington to Stewart, "The important thing for all the young people who love you [is that] we have got to keep it up between marches and elections. You know, we can't just vote and expect everything to change. You can't just march and expect everything to change."
I guess that means you should be doing more than just making plans for Oct. 30. Me? I just did my part by transcribing a video you could have watched for yourself.
