When the opportunity to interview George Takei presented itself, I asked Star Trek fans on various social media sites what they would ask Mr. Sulu. Hey fans: Here are some of your questions, and his answers (some have been edited for length).

@hpmoon: Did the Klingons need to outsource for an Elizabethan fencing coach?
George Takei
: [Hearty laugh] I would think so. That’s a barbaric society, and I don’t think they’ve advanced too much in terms of a literary culture, and certainly fencing comes from European history. It’s specific to France. Klingons are not a type of people who studied other civilizations, so they had to outsource this to Earthlings.

@brownpau:  An "Excelsior" series! Is it still possible? Can Trekkies do anything to make it happen?
GT
: [Hearty laugh]. Bless his heart. Yes, there was a huge campaign to have a new Star Trek series titled The Excelsior Campaign, but the people at Paramount have a deaf ear to the fans. When Voyager was about to be canceled, the fans wrote in - a tidal wave of letters went to Paramount.... I don’t think it’s going to happen. The fans are disappointed, as was I.

Jason Mogavero: You sould joke about the new Sulu, who's also Harold from Harold and Kumar. Ask him if he'd do a Harold and Kumar reboot, and if so, who would he get to be Kumar.
GT:
[hearty laugh] Bless their hearts. John Cho played Harold, and he is fantastic, I’ve known him quite some time. I’m the chairman of the Council of Governors for the East-West Players, the oldest minority theater. Way before Harold and Kumar, John did many plays with us. He polished his acting wings. I’ve known him to be a fine actor who can handle comedy and drama with equal dexterity, so I was overjoyed [when he was chosen] - J.J. Abrams made a great decision. He does a fantastic job as me, young.
I did Heroes and I just can’t remember. I’ve reached that point in mind where my mind blanks out. That guy on Heroes - he might make an interesting Kumar. [He means Masi Oka].

@lmoliva_: Ask him about Prop 8.
GT:
We were devastated when that passed. It passed with the most duplicitous kind of TV campaign. They used two things, the Bible and “tradition.” I respect everyone’s right to their religion, but what we’re talking about is civil law, not religious law. In our democracy, no religion has the right to impose their religious beliefs into civil law. I’m a Buddhist, and I know I can’t write my Buddhist faith into civil law and demand that everyone follow... it’s very disrespectful.
[Takei details the entire history of Proposition 8 in California.]
I’m sure that the appellate court will also overrule Prop 8 and will appeal it to the Supreme Court. I think [Justice] Kennedy will be the swing vote there. The people that are representing the challenge are amazing lawyers... I know they’re going to be successful in the appellate court, and when it’s taken to the Supreme Court, they have experience arguing in front of it. I know that ultimately, it will be overruled, and it will be the rule of the land.

@qurgh: I'd ask him how his work on Trek had an impact on Asian Amerians and what is was like being a gay man in Hollywood at that time
GT:
I think every one of us have been told ... that we inspired a person to make career or life decisions. They say that I was the only Asian image on TV that they could identify with. They felt ashamed of other depictions of them, as buffoons or evil villians. They tell me that they made them feel very proud to be Asian.
