Stewart and Colbert combine sanity, fear into one rally
For several days now, Stephen Colbert has been making jokes about not having a permit for his "March to Keep Fear Alive." It's not clear whether he even applied for one: D.C. police tells me he hasn't, and I've had no luck convincing the National Park Service to return my calls. This all became moot last night, when Colbert appeared on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show — in a cape, via greenscreen — and meekly asked, "Can you add me to your permit?"
Stewart conceded, so now the "Rally to Restore Sanity" and "March to Keep Fear Alive" have become a single "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear." Underwhelming news, to say the least. I was hoping Colbert would march toward Stewart's rally on the east end of the National Mall, leading to some sort of staged conflict. Now, it seems, they'll just share a stage together? If so, then these two showmen have their work cut out for them: Last night's Daily Show was lacking in both chemistry and humor.
And then Oprah showed up and got in on the philanthropy act. See for yourself:
