Givhan, Gopnik departures: The eulogies
Big shakeup at the Washington Post's Style section yesterday: Cultural critics Blake Gopnik and Robin Givhan are leaving D.C. for the art and fashion promised land of New York. Their hearts were already there, a few people have pointed out. Givhan will move to the Daily Beast/Newsweek (NewsBeast!), while Gopnik's New York gig is still undetermined. (Update: Gopnik is also headed to NewsBeast)
Some people are sad to see them go. Givhan won a Pulitzer for criticism – the only fashion writer to do so – while Gopnik's coverage of the Portrait Gallery censorship has been inspired. At the same time, their writing was often highly-criticized. Givhan, in particular, has inflamed female readers for writing about Hillary Clinton's cleavage and Elena Kagan's unladylike way of sitting. Gopnik often took heat from the local art community for caring more about New York than D.C. His article about the horrors of Artomatic, which he compared to amateur dentistry, is one of my favorites of his, but it made him plenty of enemies. His recent attempt to art-critique Facebook was not as winning.
Here's what others are saying:
Givhan is "one of the Washington Post’s biggest stars of the last generation," says the The New York Times, which has the most details on her move to NewsBeast. "For Ms. Brown, an editor with a sixth sense for churning up chatter about her magazines, the hire was a vintage move." Givhan will still be based in D.C. so lady-politicians who dare to show cleavage are not safe from her roving presence.
Women's Wear Daily reveals that Givhan cried before she made the decision to leave (via Styleite). “I obviously didn’t make the decision to leave quickly or without a lot of soul-searching,” Givhan told WWD. “I’ve been a sniffling, blubbering wreck for the last few days. The Post has been an unbelievable place to work. But I think it was time for me to have a new adventure, and Tina’s vision of what Newsweek can be is incredibly enticing and, I think, spot-on.”
Fashionista calls Givhan "the only fashion writer at a major newspaper to be taken seriously."
Meanwhile, not as many eulogies for Gopnik's tenure at the Post yet. Though Lenny Campello, a critic of Gopnik, promises a post soon about the soon-to-come search for his replacement.
City Paper reminisces about the time that Gopnik reviewed the National Gallery's gelateria.
The New York Observer takes the opportunity of their departure to gloat about New York's superior restaurants. We know, ok?
@tigerflight is happy to see them go. "Am I the only one excited to see Gopnik & Givhan leaving the Post? Gopnik's heart was never in DC (save the recent Wojnarowicz video report)."
@awallenstein wonders: So who's hemorrhaging harder these days, Variety or WaPo? RT @thefutureofnews: WP loses critics Givhan, Gopnik
@mrbutterworth is morose: A day to wear black in Style: Columnists Robin Givhan and Blake Gopnik are both leaving the Post.
@TylerGreenDC has praise, but surprisingly, not the scoop: Don't know where now ex-WaPo Blake Gopnik is going. He's done the best work of his career on @smithsonian fiasco.
